Eighteen years after Nibre’s MotherVR added basic VR support to Alien: Isolation a new modder attempts to finish the job with an overhaul. Here are our first impressions about the GRAND MotherVR Mod. In 2014, Creative Assembly’s Alien Isolation was shown at E3, and it had a VR Mode that could be accessed using early Rift Developer Kits, much to the horror and delight of enthusiasts. The announcement was made at a time where consumer virtual reality devices were not available, and VR gaming was a niche within a small group of enthusiasts and software developers. Sega never continued development beyond the demo made to demonstrate the Oculus DK2; they confirmed via a tweet that it was only a prototype, and not intended as a precursor to a complete game.
We saw the first version a little more than 3 years after its initial release. The mod activated the unfinished immersive modes and made a few improvements for VR. However, it did not have the polish many players were hoping for. MotherVR was updated in 2020 to allow the use motion controllers. However, the controls were only mapped on the inputs of a conventional gamepad. The new version did not give players what they wanted… motion controller support that showed hands in the game. The

is now available in 2025. This mod doesn’t simply update the foundation Nibre laid down in the classic. It’s the complete overhaul we all hoped to see years ago. JayP’s mod includes improved motion controller tracking with 6DOF, as well as various quality-of life improvements and a nice graphic update. GRAND Mother VR transformsAlien Isolationinto a more intense experience. It captures the claustrophobic stress of Sevastopol and adds newfound fidelity. The live game stream below shows some of the improvements. MotherVR by Nibre Setting up the mod is not a plug-and-play process. It requires a little file manipulation, as well as gaining a basic understanding of the directory structure of your PC. Even though everything in my case was verified to be installed correctly, I ran into some issues getting the game started. JayP helped me fix everything during a late-night Discord chat.
The main problems I faced during the setup were that Meta was not set to runtime in the in-game mod menu. If you set this incorrectly, floating hand models will appear in a position that is similar to Frankenstein’s monster. Second bug was more difficult to find. Even though I had selected the correct Runtime, the game still crashed on startup. After an hour or so of Google-fu and reading an old forum, I finally found the solution. I discovered that I had to disable the Nahimic background service on my PC. The game then started up normally, and I was able to get back to Sevastopol. If you’re like me, and the game crashes on startup every time, this workaround will hopefully save you some frustration and time. GRAND- MotherVR mod by JayP In terms of what else the mod offers, after playing the game for many years with some janky controls, and poorly implemented 6dof tracker, I think the QOL improvements brought by the GRAND MotherVR Mod are outstanding. The improved controls enhance the interaction within the environment. Those terminals, which were previously difficult to operate, are now easier to access. It’s also nice to see the visual improvements that came from the graphics revamp, especially the text that was previously blurry but is now easily read. Flat2VR discord server This graphics overhaul enhances the dark, creepy aesthetic of the game and brings out the atmosphere that is already present in Sevastopol. This polishing brings the game to life, bringing players into a sense of dread as they are continually hunted down by an aggressive Xenomorph. While scale issues still exist, they are much less obvious when playing while seated.
The hand models of the players have been added into the game. This adds an extra layer of immersion. This simple action of waving the flare in the air and watching the smoke and sparks dance around while moving through the shadowy corridors was mesmerizing. And even this basic action seemed to heighten my sense of realism when using tools such as the motion tracker which is essential later in the games for survival. While traversing the gritty depths in Sevastopol I couldn’t help thinking about how this experience might have inspired some of the
parts. Isolation focuses on the fear of being chased by a single, aggressive Xenomorph while Incursion is more about running and gunning against hordes of terrifying creatures. The GRAND-MotherVR Mod by JayP, is a remarkable achievement and one that many people in the VR Community thought would never be seen. GRAND MotherVR has revived this classic, bringing a fresh look to the aging but still frightening gameplay. If you’re ready to take the journey for the very first time or want to return to Sevastopol in VR, then this mod is the perfect invitation.
