The Resurrection of 3rd Rock Grid: A New Era for VR Communities
Get ready to set course for a fresh horizon in virtual reality (VR) and extended reality (XR), as one of the pioneering grids from the early days of Second Life, 3rd Rock Grid, has been reborn. Under its new moniker, 3rd Wind Community, this vibrant hub has not only survived but thrived, leveraging innovative solutions to overcome past challenges.
Lazuli Pooraka’s vision for 3rd Rock Grid, founded in the late 2000s, was all about nurturing creativity and community spirit. The grid became a haven for performers, with regular events supporting Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). After Laz handed over ownership to the community, the Stichting, or Cultural Harbour, took charge, ensuring the ideals of self-determination remained at its core. This bold move was cemented through the formation of a not-for-profit entity in the Netherlands.
However, as with any pioneering effort, challenges arose. The migration to new servers and bespoke OpenSim code proved disastrous due to an underqualified contractor’s overpromising and subsequent abandonment of the project. When a key IT person passed away shortly after, the grid teetered on collapse.
But the resilient community didn’t give up. Through a series of gatherings and discussions, they reached a consensus: take control of their own destiny by forming an independent entity, free from infrastructure burdens. This bold decision was a stroke of genius – for it’s not about a grid’s URL or name; it’s about its people, purpose, and collective spirit.
Rebranded as 3rd Wind Community, this revitalized entity now operates within the ZetaWorlds framework on a dedicated server managed by the experienced team. The seamless transition was made possible through Open Simulator (OS) files (OARs) and Inventory Archives (IARs). By outsourcing infrastructure and administration to Zeta, the community has achieved unprecedented financial sustainability.
Land rates as low as $2.50 per month for megaregions have allowed 3rd Wind to operate at a surplus, feeding back every extra dollar towards its mission of supporting the arts. Transparency is key, with members having access to the community’s books and controlling fiscal allocation and governance. This inclusive approach has fostered a thriving environment where artists can flourish.
The Nuna Gallery, under Public Gallery (educational) model, not only showcases visual art but also promotes it through its flagship publication, Nuna Gallery Press, an active art book publisher. The gallery operates on ZetaWorlds and Second Life, bridging the gap between virtual communities. Starfleet Infinity, a roleplay and gaming group built upon 15 years of uninterrupted legacy, has also found a new home within 3rd Wind.
This triumphant rebirth of 3rd Rock Grid sends a clear message to VR enthusiasts: even in the face of adversity, determination and innovative thinking can lead to unparalleled success. As we set course for the future of XR, it’s reassuring to know that resilient communities like 3rd Wind Community will continue to thrive, pushing the boundaries of creativity and community spirit.
With its strong emphasis on financial sustainability, transparency, and inclusivity, 3rd Wind Community is a shining example of what can be achieved when VR enthusiasts come together with a shared vision. Its innovative approach to infrastructure management and administration has paved the way for other communities to follow suit, ensuring that the future of VR remains vibrant and dynamic.
