Squido Studio made little secret of its inspirations when it

last month. It’s reminiscent of Roblox and its approach to UGC, with Garry’s Mod’s creative freedom. This is not what I was expecting from the team after their 2023 VR Platformer, announced Anarchitects. After a half-hour demo, the comparisons are justified. I tried a pre-release build on

during GDC 2024, where I was joined by two members of Squido Studio. The mixed reality of Anarchitects allows you to build levels and show them as floating areas in your home. Using MR allowed me to focus on the map more when I was adding items. Pressing X to swap between MR and the fully immersive VR mode makes this straightforward, and creators are represented as giant avatars looking down on the world.Quest 3Objects take a pleasing physics-based approach to weight that further enhances immersion and UGC’s potential creates a recipe for chaos. The menu allows you to drop anything into the fully immersive environment. Drop cars on the road of a small pre-made town and race them, or use drones that kill people to spice up the scenery. The frozen objects can be moved to a specific position without losing their functionality. Squido frozen guns in mid-air and I used them gradually to climb towards a hot-air balloon. It was only after I realized this that the Touch Controllers would still shoot them when pressed. Was I not clear that weapons can still hurt you even if you are holding them? Anarchitects is already inspiring me to create more game modes. Squido told me lightsabers could deflect bullets and rocket launchers. I instantly thought of a baseball-style game where you would bat them away. I did not get to see how rules are set up for my own games, but I was able to imagine this. The shaky motions of the camera made me feel a little queasy near the end even though I was using minimal comfort settings. I’m told the team is looking to implement more comfort options, though at launch you can expect artificial stick-based locomotion, dominant hand selection, seated and standing modes, plus smooth and snap-turning cameras.

Might Anarchitects appeal to a younger audience with its undeniably creative sandbox? We’ll watch to see if the game gains momentum and we have planned seasonal content updates.
