XREAL Aura Makes a Splash at AWE with its Revolutionary AR Glasses Design
The augmented reality (AR) space just got a whole lot more interesting with the unveiling of XREAL Aura, a consumer-oriented Android XR AR glasses that’s been making waves at this year’s AWE. As one of the most anticipated XR headsets of the year, I was lucky enough to get my hands on these sleek and innovative glasses for two hands-on sessions, and I’m here to give you the lowdown.
Developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm, XREAL Aura boasts a unique all-in-two design that splits the computing power and battery from the glasses themselves. This clever arrangement allows the headset to be both lightweight and compact, making it perfect for everyday wear – just like bulky sunglasses! The design is undeniably stylish, with a futuristic look that’s sure to turn heads (or at least get some curious glances). In fact, I was impressed by how cool I looked when wearing them in photos, but as we’ll see later, there are some caveats to this.
Let’s dive into the specs: XREAL Aura packs a punch with its Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite + XREAL X1S Spatial Coprocessor chipsets, Birdbath optics technology, and a resolution of 1920 x 1200 per eye. The framerate is a respectable up to 120Hz, while the field-of-view (FOV) measures an impressive 70° (diagonal). Six degrees of freedom (6DOF) tracking is provided by two cameras, with additional support from a single RGB vision camera.
But what really sets XREAL Aura apart is its Android XR operating system, which promises seamless integration with your existing Android devices. With storage options ranging from 256GB to 512GB and memory options of either 12GB or 16GB, you’ll have plenty of room for apps, games, and content. And don’t worry about battery life – the 4,455mAh capacity should keep you going all day.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: how do these glasses feel in real-world use? While they’re undeniably comfortable to wear, especially considering their lightweight design (95g), there’s a caveat. If we compare them to headsets like the Quest, XREAL Aura is indeed more lightweight and comfortable. However, if we pit them against smartglasses like Ray-Ban Meta, they do feel bulkier and less comfortable.
But here’s the thing: comfort is subjective, and for casual wear – say, at home or on a plane – these glasses are perfect. They’re almost like wearing big sunglasses, which I found to be surprisingly pleasant. However, as we mentioned earlier, there’s a problem with how they look from the side – a bit too bulky and distant from the eyes.
So what does this mean for the future of VR/XR? XREAL Aura is a game-changer in the AR space, pushing the boundaries of what we thought was possible. Its innovative design, paired with its impressive specs, makes it an exciting prospect for anyone looking to dip their toes into the world of augmented reality. Will these glasses revolutionize the way we interact with our surroundings? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure – XREAL Aura is a step in the right direction, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for this trailblazing technology.
