Take-Two subpoenas Microsoft and Discord in bid to halt extensive Grand Theft Auto VI leak

The Grand Theft Auto VI leak saga just got a whole lot more complicated. In a desperate bid to track down the notorious “Cyberleek” entity responsible for unleashing a torrent of sensitive game footage online, Take-Two Interactive has served Microsoft and Discord with subpoenas, seeking information that could help identify the leaker.

The move is a significant escalation in the ongoing battle to contain the leaks, which have been pouring out at an alarming rate. Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two is reportedly scrambling to halt any further releases of sensitive game data, which has already included what appears to be an older build of Grand Theft Auto VI. The leaker, known as “Cyberleek,” has made it clear that they have access to even more confidential material and have threatened to target other major game publishers who fail to comply with their demands.

Microsoft’s Github repository, which Take-Two is seeking records from, has been at the center of the leak storm. The company purchased Github in 2018, and it appears that Cyberleek may be using the platform to distribute leaked content. Meanwhile, Discord has also come under scrutiny, with Take-Two asking for records related to specific servers and users who have interacted with them.

Matthew Judge, a content creator whose server was inadvertently swept up in the subpoena, expressed his confusion on social media. “I don’t know anything,” he wrote. “That isn’t my editor’s Discord… There aren’t even any clips of the leaks in either of my Discords.” He speculated that his server might have been targeted due to references to his content in some videos released by Cyberleek.

The stakes are high, and Take-Two is taking no chances. The company has reportedly implemented strict security protocols following a previous cybersecurity breach, but it appears that these measures may not be enough to prevent further leaks. Employees and company leaders at Rockstar Games are said to be “angry” about the situation, which could have significant repercussions for the game’s development timeline.

The leak saga is also taking on a worrying tone, with Cyberleek posting a manifesto outlining its demands for the industry. The document, which includes commandments related to digital pre-orders, day-one DLC, and online game preservation, concludes with a chilling warning: “All big corpo” could be the next target.

As the situation unfolds, one thing is clear: Take-Two’s efforts to contain the leaks will be closely watched by the gaming community. The outcome of this saga will not only have significant implications for Rockstar Games and Grand Theft Auto VI but also set a precedent for how major game publishers handle sensitive data in the future.

In the short term, it remains to be seen whether Take-Two’s efforts will pay off. But one thing is certain: the world of gaming has never been more vulnerable to cybersecurity threats, and companies like Rockstar Games must adapt quickly to prevent further breaches.
