The iconic 3rd Rock Grid is back from the dead and thriving in OpenSim, with a bold vision for its rebirth. Founded in 2007 by Terry Ford, aka Butch Arnold, this pioneering grid has been rebuilt from scratch, incorporating lessons learned from its past and injecting new life into its classic charm.
Ford’s ambitious plan involves not only restoring the grid to its former glory but also expanding its offerings and creating a vibrant community of creators, builders, and residents. The results are already impressive: 51 registered avatars have joined since its revival in July, with 68 visitors over the past month. The grid now boasts an impressive 141 standard regions, divided into distinct areas like Rock-N-Roll City, beach and island zones, industrial districts, medieval landscapes, and science fiction realms.
Ford’s commitment to rebuilding and modernizing the grid is evident in every aspect of its revival. He’s creating a new free content library from scratch, including male and female mesh avatars, clothing, skins, and hair, ensuring that newcomers have plenty to work with when they arrive. This forward-thinking approach also extends to the grid’s commercial areas, which are currently under construction.
As Ford explained in an interview with Hypergrid Business, “Rather than simply trying to bring the old grid back online similar to how it was, we’re taking the opportunity to rebuild and expand quite a bit of it.” He’s also looking for talented individuals to join his team as builders, landscapers, mesh creators, photographers, content creators, entertainers, club and event organizers, promoters, community recruiters, and social media experts. Ford emphasizes that he wants to build a community of passionate OpenSim users who can contribute their skills and creativity to shaping the grid’s future.
Two staff roles have already been filled: Jericho Rain is the grid manager, while Tinsel Silvera, a veteran 3rd Rock Grid resident since 2008, serves as assistant grid manager. A community liaison position remains open, along with merchant and event opportunities that will surely attract entrepreneurs and event planners.
Ford’s goal for the rebuilt 3rd Rock Grid is clear: to create a thriving virtual world where users can connect, express themselves, and enjoy the classic charm of its original incarnation. As he notes, “I don’t want the rebuilt 3rd Rock Grid to exist simply because of its history.” Instead, he envisions a dynamic, inclusive space that showcases the best of OpenSim’s community-driven spirit.
The grid’s rebirth has significant implications for the future of VR and XR. By reviving a beloved classic like 3rd Rock Grid, Ford is demonstrating the power of innovation and adaptation in virtual worlds. As VR enthusiasts know all too well, immersive experiences rely on vibrant communities that drive creativity, participation, and growth. With its expanded offerings, rebuilt infrastructure, and renewed focus on community engagement, 3rd Rock Grid is poised to become a shining example of what’s possible when passion, expertise, and forward-thinking come together in the virtual realm.
