Epic Games sells ArtStation and Sketchfab to KitBash

In a surprise move that’s sent shockwaves through the creative community, Epic Games has announced it will be selling its portfolio platform ArtStation and 3D model marketplace Sketchfab to KitBash. This comes just over five years after Epic acquired both platforms in 2021 as part of its expansion into the world of visual arts and design.

The sale marks a significant shift for Epic, which is prioritizing its core business of building Unreal Engine 6, Fortnite, the Epic Games Store, and its wider developer ecosystem. ArtStation and Sketchfab will now be managed by KitBash, a company that’s already made a name for itself in the 3D art space with platforms like KitBash3D and Greyscalegorilla.

KitBash has expressed its commitment to preserving the integrity of both ArtStation and Sketchfab. In a blog post on the Epic website, co-CEO Banks Boutté reassured users that the company will “protect what users value most about each platform” and “listen to the people who rely on them.” This is music to the ears of artists and designers around the world who have built their careers and communities on these platforms.

The acquisition is also a strategic move for KitBash, which has been expanding its reach in the 3D art space. By adding ArtStation and Sketchfab to its portfolio, KitBash will gain access to a vast library of creative assets and talent, further solidifying its position as a leading provider of 3D art tools and services.

The sale is part of Epic’s broader effort to cut costs and streamline its business operations. Earlier this year, the company announced it would be eliminating over 1,000 jobs in response to a downturn in Fortnite engagement that began in 2025. The layoffs are expected to result in over $500 million in savings for the company.

For VR enthusiasts and creators, the sale of ArtStation and Sketchfab is a reminder of the rapidly evolving landscape of creative technologies. As companies like KitBash continue to innovate and expand their offerings, we can expect even more exciting developments in the world of 3D art and design.

The future of VR and XR also looks bright as Epic continues to focus on building Unreal Engine 6 and other core products. With this sale, Epic is effectively freeing itself up to concentrate on its core strengths while leaving the creative community in capable hands with KitBash at the helm. As we look to the future, one thing is clear: the intersection of art, design, and technology will continue to be a driving force behind innovation in the world of VR and XR.
