In a stunning showcase at this year’s AWE conference, Canon has been letting attendees get hands-on experience with two of its latest mixed-reality (MR) headsets – one of which is an incredibly small prototype and the other a high-end enterprise solution. We had the chance to try out both devices and offer our first impressions.

First up was the tiny MR headset, a device that’s so small it can be held in the palm of your hand. Measuring just inches in diameter, this innovative prototype features only an optical module and no computation units – meaning it needs to be connected to a PC or smartphone to function. One major drawback is the lack of positional tracking – at least for now. Instead, the demo relied on marker-based visualization, which feels like a step back to 2014. We’re told that this device is still in prototype phase, and Canon plans to use the same optical module in future AR/VR headsets. Our advice? Expand the field of view and add some form of tracking to bring it more in line with current market standards.

Moving on to the MREAL X1, an enterprise MR headset priced at a whopping $20K for the headset, PC, and connection box alone. Yes, you read that right – this is not a consumer-grade device by any stretch. Our hands-on experience was… underwhelming, to say the least. Despite its sleek design and generous open periphery, which allows users to stay aware of their surroundings while immersed in VR content, the X1 failed to deliver the “true metaverse experience” we were expecting.

The MREAL X1’s design is certainly an improvement over its predecessor, the MREAL S1, but it still feels like a hefty price tag for what you get. We’re told that this device is aimed at enterprise customers who need high-end MR capabilities, and while it may not be the most impressive consumer-grade headset, it does offer some unique features.

So what does this mean for the future of VR/XR? Canon’s foray into the enterprise market with these innovative headsets signals a growing recognition that MR technology has real-world applications beyond gaming. As more companies like Canon explore the possibilities of MR in industries such as education, healthcare, and entertainment, we can expect to see new use cases emerge and existing ones become even more sophisticated.
