A powerful show of solidarity is brewing in the Xbox community. On July 15, union workers at Bethesda Game Studios will take to the streets with a “Save Our Devs” rally in protest of the latest round of mass layoffs across Xbox. The march, organized by union members under the OneBGS banner, aims to send a clear message to Xbox leadership: they won’t be silenced or abandoned.
The cuts, which have already seen 35 positions eliminated at Bethesda Game Studios in the US and at least 12 more in Montreal, are just the tip of the iceberg. Microsoft has announced plans to slash over 3,200 roles across Xbox by June 2027, citing a need to “reset” after failing to capitalize on big bets like Xbox Game Pass and a multiplatform pivot. But for union workers, these layoffs are not just about numbers – they’re about people’s livelihoods.
“We mean business,” declared the OneBGS Mobilizing Committee in an email sent to union members. “Microsoft and ZeniMax leadership have made the devastating decision to slash over 440 positions across BGS, ZOS, id, ZWU(QA), and ZeniMax corporate – including CTO and CSUR. Because we organized and certified our Unions, we have hard-won legal rights and protections that non-unionized studios simply don’t have.”
The rally is a direct response to what union members see as a blatant attempt by Microsoft to dodge its legal obligations to bargain with workers over the layoffs’ impact. “Changing a title on a PowerPoint slide does not erase our legal right to a say in our working conditions,” the email read. By pushing for preferential transfers, stronger severance packages, and recall rights, union members aim to protect their colleagues and send a message that they won’t be ignored.
As the rally approaches, Xbox workers are coming together in solidarity, showing that even in the face of adversity, their voices can be heard. This is more than just a protest – it’s a statement about the value of workers’ rights and the importance of collective action. By standing united, these developers are fighting not just for themselves but for the future of their industry.
The implications of this rally extend far beyond the Xbox community. As the games industry continues to grapple with issues like unionization, worker rights, and corporate accountability, the “Save Our Devs” march serves as a powerful reminder that workers will no longer be silenced or marginalized. This is a movement that’s gaining momentum, and its impact will be felt for years to come.
As the rally on July 15 draws near, one thing is clear: Xbox workers mean business – and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.
