Google gave another demo on stage of “prototype” smart glasses that had a monocular HUD at Google I/O 2020.
This is because last month, the same pair of people, Shahram IZADI (Google’s Android XR leader) and Nishtha BHATIA (a Google PM), did a very similar demonstration on stage. at TED2025 Both the TED and I/O demos are heavily focused on Gemini AI. The demo also showed off some other features, such as the ability to receive and reply to messages notifications and take photos. Izadi, Bhatia and Ray-Ban Meta glasses were used to demonstrate real-time speech translation. Bhatias glasses were able to cast a view, but it froze in the middle of the demo. Izadi commented that they had warned about the dangers of this demo.

The two companies are rising competitors of EssilorLuxottica’s Oakley and Ray-Ban. Google, however, described the hardware shown at I/O in I/O’s stage as “prototype” and said that a display was “,optional”, for actual products. It did not specify whether Gentle Monster or Warby Parker will be releasing their first products with a HUD. It’s possible that they’ll be simpler devices, like Ray-Ban Meta sunglasses. Meta rolled out The HUD will be available on all of these glasses, so they won’t be the only one. Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta is reportedly planning to launch its smart glasses later this year with a monocular colored HUD. While Google’s glasses can be controlled primarily by voice, Meta’s HUD glass will be
