Alien Isolation’s GRAND-MotherVR mod adds hands & brings QOL improvements

Read on for our first impressions of the GRAND-MotherVR Mod. Here are our initial impressions about the GRAND MotherVR Mod.

When Creative Assembly’s Alien Isolation was shown at E3 2014, it had a VR feature that could be used with the early Rift Developer Kits, to both the delight and terror of fans. It was exciting to see this at a moment when VR headsets for consumers were still not available. VR gaming was a niche that was confined within the small group of enthusiasts and developers. Sega never continued development beyond the Oculus DK2 demo and insisted via a Twitter that it was only a prototype, not a precursor for a complete game.

Few years after its initial release of

we got to see the first version. The mod enabled the immersive mode, and made a few improvements to VR. However, it did not have the polish many players wished for. MotherVR received an update in 2020 that allowed the use of the motion controllers, but they were only mapped to the traditional inputs. The new version did not give players the support they wanted… motion controllers with their hands visible in game. In 2025 the public release of the MotherVR by Nibre on the

was made. The mod doesn’t simply update the foundation Nibre laid down in the classic. It’s a complete overhaul that many of us hoped to see all those years back. JayP’s mod includes improved 6DOF motion tracking support, as well as various quality-of life improvements. It also features a graphics upgrade. GRAND- MotherVR mod by JayPGRAND-MotherVR transforms Alien: Isolation into an even more nail-biting experience than ever before, capturing the claustrophobic tension of Sevastopol station and adding newfound fidelity. Getting the mod up and running is not plug and play, and requires some file manipulation and a basic knowledge of your PC’s directory structure. Although everything in my case was installed properly, there were still a few problems getting the game started. JayP helped me fix everything during a Discord chat late at night. The two biggest issues that I had during setup were not having Meta set as the default runtime option in the in-game mod menu. This can cause floating hand models to appear in an unnatural position. Second bug: this was more challenging to find. The game crashed to the desktop every time I started it, even though I selected the right runtime. The solution came to me after about an hour’s worth of Google searches. I found it by reading an old forum thread. After reading an old forum post, I discovered that I had to turn off the Nahimic background service on my computer. After I had done this, the game began to run normally. Finally, I made it back to Sevastopol Station. This workaround may not be needed for all players, but if you are like me and keep seeing the game crash on startup, hopefully knowing this trick saves you some time and frustration.

As for what else the mod brings to the table, I can say now that after playing this game for years with somewhat janky controls and poorly implemented 6dof tracking, the QOL improvements in the GRAND-MotherVR mod are a standout. Reworked controls make it easier to interact with the game environment. Terminals that were once difficult to operate are also now more easily accessible. The visual improvements brought about by the graphic overhaul are very impressive, particularly when the blurry text is now easily readable. The graphics revamp also intensifies the dark, creepy atmosphere of the game and enhances the atmospheric quality that is already present in Sevastopol Station. The new polish brings the game to life, allowing players to feel a sense of dread as they are continually hunted down by an aggressive Xenomorph. Scale issues are still there, but were much less noticeable during seated play.

Players’ hands are also now represented in the game, and just having the hand models present now seems to add another layer of immersion. Even something so simple, like waving a flare and seeing the smoke and sparks dance in the air as you creep through dark corridors, seemed to enhance the sense of immersion I felt when using the motion tracking tool, later on, this is essential to continue survival.

At times while traversing through the gritty depths of Sevastopol, I couldn’t help but think of how this experience could have inspired parts of the

. the big difference here being that Isolation focuses more on the terror experienced while being hunted by a single and very aggressive Xenomorph, whereas Incursion is all about run-and-gun tactics against an onslaught of the terrifying beasts.

Overall, the GRAND-MotherVR mod by JayP is an impressive accomplishment and quite frankly one that many in the VR community thought we might never see. GRAND-MotherVR, while not yet perfect, has revitalized the classic game and brought it to a younger generation. This mod will allow you to experience Sevastopol Station in virtual reality for the very first time.
