Apple Vision Pro: Gears & goo’s Tower Defense Reimagined for Hand & eye tracking

Read on for our full overview. I spent two seven-hour trains rides during Christmas holiday playing Gears & Goo by Resolution Games. When I got to the later missions I was repeating maps almost an hour at a time, improving each time my performance, gathering resources, and combining power, while fending of the waves of increasingly difficult enemies moving down different paths towards my base. The new tower defense game, which is available on Apple Arcade right now, will appeal to fans of both strategy and tower defence. This is also a great resource for developers of mixed reality games who could learn a lot from Resolution’s clever use of hand- and eye tracking. Demeo is also a Resolution product that uses the same gesture. It would be interesting to see if I could use the same gesture to place multiple spatial applications next to each other around me. You can quickly move and resize the map to make it easier for you to control. The only time I played this game was seated. I found myself moving the map around to get a better look at various units and structures. Most maps have a different gameplay element that builds over time to an explosion near the end, just when you’ve mastered your arsenal. The voice acting is both funny and cute. This bubbly cast of characters is spewing hot and cold projectiles against each other in a story about soda and corporate greed. Gears & Goo is a great use of Apple’s eye and pinch interface. I breeze through the levels, it’s that smooth. While I breeze through the levels, it’s that smooth because Gears & Goo is such a great use of Apple’s eye and pinch interface.

While you’re not going to find the weapon or map variety as seen in titles like Bloons Tower Defense 6+, which adds a 3D shelf to its minimally modified spatial interface on Vision Pro, you are going to get a much better use of hand and eye tracking here in Gears & Goo.

Resolution Games neither supports multitasking nor fully immersive VR mode for the launch version of Gears & Goo. The launch version of Gears & Goo does not support multitasking or fully immersive VR mode. The game was played against my wall, and I sat in the rear seats of the train car. There’s also a mode that lets you place your units on a physical table, but it’s not fun and I would have instead preferred to overlay a virtual environment as a backdrop to the main game.

Gears & Goo: More Please

Not as many people are likely to play Gears & Goo on Apple Vision Pro as might Resolution Games’ other titles, like

or even

on any headset, but the title kicks off 2025 showing thoughtful new spatial design for visionOS. Gears & Goo is a great game for Apple Vision Pro, with its easy to use controls. I’d be happy to play a future sequel or an expansion. It would be interesting to see how Resolution Games or others use the pinching gesture with your middle finger. You can download Gears & Goo for iPhone on the App Store.
