What a surreal and hilarious twist of fate! While attending Meta Connect, the premier event for all things XR, I found myself face-to-face with none other than Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, Meta’s Chief Technology Officer. It was an opportunity I never thought would happen, and yet it did – in the most unexpected way.
As a VR enthusiast and journalist, I’d been itching to get my hands on the latest Meta VR Glasses, codenamed “Phoenix.” The hype surrounding this new headset has been building up for months, and I was determined to be among the first to try it out. Alas, fate had other plans. Upon arriving at Connect, I discovered that there were no demo stations set up for Phoenix – just a glossy marketing video showcasing its features. I won’t spoil the details, but let’s just say it didn’t exactly leave me drooling.
With my plan foiled, I decided to indulge in the incredible spread of food available at Connect (more on that later). As I chatted with Scott Hayden from Road To VR about all things VR journalism, I spotted a familiar face across the room. “But isn’t that BOZ?” I whispered to Scott, pointing to a tall figure about 4 meters away, happily munching on a taco. And indeed it was – Andrew “Boz” Bosworth himself, savoring his meal in peace.
What did I do next? Well, I must admit I was torn between two conflicting desires: leave him be and enjoy his taco, or seize the opportunity of a lifetime to interact with Meta’s top technologist. After some deliberation, my inner geek won out. I approached Boz (with Scott’s encouragement), introduced myself, and… ended up having an impromptu conversation about all things VR.
Now, before you think this is a tale of some sort of “I-interviewed-Boz-and-now-I’m-a-guru” story, let me clarify: the interview itself wasn’t exactly earth-shattering. No secrets were revealed, and no groundbreaking announcements made. It was simply… an opportunity to talk with Boz about VR in a relaxed setting.
As we chatted, I couldn’t help but think that this chance encounter might have been more significant than I initially thought. After all, it’s not every day you get to chat with the CTO of Meta – or even attend their flagship event for that matter. The experience reminded me of just how close-knit and accessible the VR community can be.
Now, what does this mean for the future of VR? As I see it, events like Meta Connect showcase the growing momentum behind XR technology. With each passing year, we’re witnessing more innovation, more investment, and a greater sense of collaboration among industry leaders. It’s an exciting time to be part of this community – and who knows? Maybe next year at Connect, I’ll have the chance to try out Phoenix in person!
