‘We want to keep it very simple:’ How Nex Playground is beating expectations during a hardware crisis

Nex Playground is Defying Expectations with its Family-Focused, Motion-Controlled Console

In a year marked by component shortages and price hikes, Nex Playground is beating expectations with its innovative motion-controlled console. The company’s head of international Tom Kang revealed that sales velocity in key markets like the UK is exceeding internal targets, thanks to a combination of strategic marketing and supply chain management.

Nex Playground’s omni-channel approach has proven to be a winning formula, with the device available in retail stores and digital platforms like TikTok Shop. Kang credits this multi-pronged strategy for creating awareness and driving conversions among customers. “We’ve learned that omni-channel works,” he says. “It’s where our customers are, so we’re able to create awareness and conversion.” The company has also seen success with creators who love producing content for the Playground, as it showcases well in demos at retail stores.

Establishing a solid supply chain has been a significant challenge for Nex, given the ongoing AI-driven component crisis. However, Kang is confident that the company’s solution will mitigate these issues. “We have a new leader managing global supply, and we’re way more nimble than we used to be,” he explains. With production now taking place in multiple regions, including Mexico and China, Nex has reduced lead times and is better equipped to meet demand.

The component crisis has undoubtedly thrown the consumer electronics market into chaos, with price hikes a common occurrence. However, Kang stresses that Nex remains committed to selling hardware that is “as affordable as possible.” The company absorbed some of the costs related to the tariffs imposed by the U.S. administration, which were later deemed illegal by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Nex Playground’s focus on sustainability and margins is a key factor in its success. Kang emphasizes the importance of maintaining profitability, even if it means slim margins for both hardware and software. “We want to be a sustainable business,” he says. “If we don’t create margin, we can’t continue to invest in software, and our software costs are going up every year – significantly.”

The company’s rolling roster of titles, accessible via an annual or quarterly subscription plan, has been bolstered with the addition of notable licensed projects like Sonic Forces and Pac-Man. Kang notes that content drives this device, and Nex will likely assess its Play Pass subscriptions on a biannual basis but doesn’t expect significant changes in the near future.

Nex Playground’s success is a testament to the company’s innovative approach and commitment to sustainability. As the VR and XR industries continue to evolve, it’s clear that Nex is poised for continued growth and expansion. With a solid supply chain, omni-channel marketing strategy, and focus on affordability, this family-focused console is well on its way to becoming a global platform.

As we look to the future of VR and XR, Nex Playground’s success serves as a reminder that innovation and adaptability are key to thriving in an ever-changing market. With its commitment to sustainability and customer-centric approach, Nex is paving the way for a new era of immersive entertainment.
