‘Each event has to feel local and relevant to its market:’ Gamescom wants responsible expansion after record-breaking year

Gamescom 2026 Breaks Records, Puts Focus on Local Relevance and Industry Unity

The excitement is building in Cologne as Gamescom 2026 prepares to kick off its biggest show yet. With a record-breaking 1,600 exhibitors from 67 countries and over 233,000 square meters of exhibition space sold out, the industry’s premier event has set the bar high for itself. But what does this milestone mean for the future of Gamescom, and how will it continue to evolve in the years to come?

According to Felix Falk, managing director of Gamescom co-organiser Game, the growth is a testament to the demand from the global gaming industry for a platform that connects companies and communities. “We don’t expand Gamescom just to put our name in more places,” he explained. “Each event has to feel local and relevant to its market, but still clearly part of the Gamescom family.” This approach has been instrumental in the success of regional editions like Gamescom Latam in São Paulo and Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show in Bangkok.

Falk emphasized that uniting the entire game industry ecosystem is crucial in today’s challenging times. “The growth of gamescom shows that people and companies are looking forward to connecting with each other and talking about new games, opportunities, ideas, and innovations,” he said. By bringing together players, media, content creators, investors, platform holders, and publishers under one roof, Gamescom provides a unique space for networking, business development, and innovation.

The show’s focus on supporting indie developers is also a key aspect of its success. With the indie area growing by 16% compared to last year, hundreds of games from over 420 companies will be showcased at the event. Falk stressed that supporting visibility through formats like the indie area, Gamescom Awesome Indies Show, and Gamescom Invest Circle is essential in helping young studios meet investors, publishers, and strategic partners.

As the gaming industry continues to evolve, Gamescom’s role as a hub for innovation and connection will remain vital. With its commitment to local relevance and industry unity, the show has set itself up for continued success in the years to come. As Falk put it, “Our current priority is not to add more locations as quickly as possible, but to make sure that each event delivers value for those working within the industry.”

The future of Gamescom looks bright, with a renewed focus on what matters most: bringing people and companies together to create new opportunities and drive innovation in the gaming industry. As we count down to the start of the show, one thing is clear – Gamescom 2026 is going to be an event for the ages.
