WINGS Takes Flight with New Funding Options for Indie Game Developers
In a major boost to the indie game development scene, WINGS has announced an expansion of its funding pathways, offering more flexibility and support to developers working on PC projects. This move comes as welcome news in a funding climate that’s become increasingly challenging for developers of all shapes and sizes.
WINGS, an investor committed to empowering women and gender-marginalized devs, is now soliciting pitches for projects with budgets under $500,000, including marketing expenses. To accommodate this, the organization has introduced three new forms of investment: white label publishing, self-publishing partnerships, and finishing funds. These options cater to different stages of development and offer varying levels of support.
One of the standout features of WINGS’ approach is its emphasis on flexibility and creative freedom. Regardless of which funding pathway developers choose, they’ll retain full control over their project’s creative direction and business strategy. This level of autonomy allows devs to focus on what matters most: crafting an exceptional gaming experience. As Astrid Refstrup, WINGS CEO, puts it, “Every game is different, and we prioritize flexibility and the right deal for everyone above fitting perfectly into one of our models.”
The white label publishing option provides support in areas like go-to-market strategy, paid advertising, content creation, and business development – perfect for teams that aren’t ready or don’t want to self-publish. Self-publishing partnerships, on the other hand, see WINGS covering development, marketing, and other costs while providing a comprehensive go-to-market strategy. This option requires more responsibility from developers in areas like marketing, QA, localization, and more.
Finishing funds offer a cash injection to help teams cross the finish line, specifically designed for projects with a budget of $100,000 or less and the ability to launch within three to six months. Refstrup emphasized that this is an ideal option for those close to release who need a final push.
The new funding options are part of WINGS’ broader mission to support women and gender-marginalized developers in the gaming industry. By providing more flexible investment models, the organization aims to empower devs with the resources they need to bring their ideas to life. As Refstrup noted, “Making the right investments means we can continue investing in even more women and gender-marginalized developers.” This commitment to long-term sustainability and success is a testament to WINGS’ dedication to fostering a more inclusive and vibrant gaming ecosystem.
The expansion of WINGS’ funding pathways marks an exciting development for indie game developers, offering them more opportunities to secure the support they need. As the industry continues to evolve, it’s heartening to see initiatives like WINGS prioritizing creative freedom, flexibility, and long-term sustainability. With this new wave of funding options, WINGS is well-positioned to play a significant role in shaping the future of PC gaming – and beyond.
