Warren Spector, the legendary game developer behind classics like System Shock and Deus Ex, is hanging up his hat after a storied 43-year career in the industry. In a heartfelt LinkedIn post, Spector announced his retirement, citing age and health as reasons for stepping away from the game development scene.
But don’t expect him to be completely out of the picture – Spector says he’s got ideas brewing for three new games that he’d love to make, although he’s “pretty sure” this time he means it when he says he’s retiring. With 17 full games and around nine add-on packs under his belt, Spector reflects on a career marked by milestones and memories. From running teams as small as a dozen to as big as 800, to working with big companies and startups, Spector has left an indelible mark on the industry.
Despite his achievements, Spector admits that the game development landscape has changed significantly over the years, making it less enjoyable for him. “The business has changed, and it’s just not as much fun for me anymore,” he says. This sentiment is echoed by his decision to step back and allow a new generation of developers to take the reins – something he believes is essential for innovation and progress.
Spector’s latest venture with OtherSide Entertainment yielded mixed results. The team released Thick as Thieves, a stealth-action game that underwent significant changes in scope during development. Although it received some praise, the experience was marred by layoffs and project cancellations, including the high-profile cancellation of Argos. This led to a significant reduction in staff at the studio.
In his post, Spector encourages young developers to “make people forget people like me ever existed.” He emphasizes that games are not yet a solved problem, and there’s still plenty of room for experimentation and innovation. As he rides off into the sunset, Spector leaves behind a legacy that will undoubtedly continue to shape the industry.
So what does this mean for the future of VR and XR? With Spector’s expertise and influence now absent from the scene, it will be interesting to see how his protégés and colleagues step up to fill the void. Will they push boundaries and explore new frontiers in immersive gaming, or will they stick to established formulas? One thing is certain – Warren Spector’s retirement marks the end of an era, but it also ushers in a new chapter for the industry, full of possibilities and promise.
