At AWE 2026, we had the chance to sit down with OOL’s team and witness firsthand their remarkable technology in action. The company’s adjustable fluid lenses are unlike anything else on the market – they’re not made of glass, but rather a membrane containing a fluid that can be manipulated to change its optical properties. This is achieved by altering the pressure at specific points on the lens, allowing it to adapt to different vision needs. For instance, the same lens could be used for someone with myopia and then adjusted to correct presbyopia. We had the opportunity to handle one of these remarkable lenses up close, and our initial impressions were striking. The lens itself appeared soft to the touch, reminiscent of an antistress toy or a balloon filled with water. However, OOL assured us that despite its pliability, it’s incredibly resilient – some prototypes have even withstood over 15 years without degradation. We put this claim to the test ourselves by gently tapping on the lens with our fingers; much to our surprise (and relief), it didn’t break.

But what truly sets these lenses apart is their ability to change optical properties in real-time. By applying a pressure pattern using a specialized “deformer,” the lens can shift its focal point and adjust various parameters. We witnessed this phenomenon firsthand, as OOL’s team demonstrated how the same base lens could be adapted for different users by simply changing the shape profile of the deformer.

This technology holds enormous promise for VR and XR enthusiasts – particularly those with astigmatism, which can significantly impact perceived resolution. A mild astigmatism of just 0.5 diopters can reduce a user’s perceived resolution to as low as 13 PPD (pixels per degree), compared to the Quest 3’s impressive 25 PPD. With OOL’s varifocal technology, this limitation could soon be a thing of the past.

While the ultimate goal is to integrate these lenses into varifocal headsets, OOL is taking a step-by-step approach. Their next milestone could involve developing customized glasses that utilize their adaptive technology.
