Halo Studios jettisons long-serving contractors after launch of Halo: Campaign Evolved

The latest shake-up in the gaming industry has left many wondering what’s next for Halo Studios. Just a month after Microsoft confirmed it would be cutting 3,200 roles across Xbox to “reset” its flagging video game business, the studio behind the highly-anticipated remake of Halo: Campaign Evolved has made some tough decisions regarding its contract workforce.

According to sources familiar with the situation, an unknown number of contract roles at Halo Studios have been eliminated following the launch of the shooter on July 28, 2026. While it’s reported that no full-time workers have been laid off, several long-serving contractors who worked on the project have taken to social media to share their disappointment and gratitude for their time at the studio.

One contractor, who had spent over six years working on Halo, expressed his sadness in a LinkedIn post: “After 6.5 years working on Halo and dodging just as many rounds of layoffs—it has finally caught up to me. I have nothing but love for Halo and the folks at the studio, this is just a tough reality in the gaming industry right now.” Another contractor, who had served as a ‘scrum master’ at Halo Studios for over two years, shared a similar sentiment: “Today, I learned my time at Halo Studios will be coming to an end following the successful launch of our latest game, Halo: Campaign Evolved.”

It’s clear that these departures are not just limited to contract workers. The changes at Halo Studios come hot on the heels of Microsoft’s decision to part ways with several notable studios, including Double Fine, Compulsion, and Ninja Theory, as well as significant layoffs across subsidiaries such as Obsidian, id Software, and ZeniMax Online Studios.

The launch of Halo: Campaign Evolved marked a major milestone for the studio, featuring expanded story content and impressive graphics. While it’s unclear what sparked this decision to let go of contract workers, it’s possible that Microsoft is looking to streamline its operations and focus on more core projects.

This news may raise concerns among fans of the franchise, but it also highlights the ever-changing landscape of the gaming industry. As companies look for ways to stay competitive and adapt to shifting market trends, we can expect to see more changes in the coming months.

For VR enthusiasts, however, this development is a reminder that the boundaries between traditional gaming and immersive experiences are becoming increasingly blurred. With the rise of cloud gaming and subscription services, it’s not hard to imagine a future where gamers can access high-quality VR content on-demand, without the need for expensive hardware or cumbersome setup processes.

As we look to the future of VR and XR, one thing is clear: innovation will continue to drive this industry forward. While changes at Halo Studios may be unsettling for some, they also serve as a reminder that the gaming landscape is constantly evolving – and that there are many exciting developments on the horizon for fans of immersive experiences.
