Radiant Images offers a portable system to record Gaussian Splat videos

Gaussian Splat Videos Just Got a Whole Lot More Portable and Accessible

Imagine having your favorite musician or influencer right in front of you, as if they were really there. The excitement is palpable when combined with mixed reality technology. And now, thanks to Radiant Images’ innovative portable system for recording Gaussian Splat videos, this dream is becoming a reality. I had the chance to speak with Michael Mansouri, CEO of Radiant Images, at AWE and learn more about their groundbreaking solution.

Recording volumetric videos has traditionally been a cumbersome process, requiring expensive capture rigs with multiple cameras. These setups are often stationary and can be costly to maintain, not to mention the added expense of transporting actors to the recording location. But Radiant Images is changing all that with its modular recording tower, which consists of independent “columns” of iPhones equipped with LiDARs and powerful processors.

Each column can operate on its own battery power, eliminating the need for cables or a local server. This makes the system highly portable and flexible, allowing Radiant Images to set up shop anywhere in the world. In fact, Michael told me that their recording tower can even fit inside checked baggage, making it easy to transport.

One of the key advantages of using iPhones as recording units is their ability to pre-process video locally. This means that color grading, cutting out unwanted parts of the image, and other tasks can be done on-site, saving time and money by reducing the need for data transfer and server-side computation. And when it’s time to upgrade the system, Radiant Images simply updates the iPhones to the latest model, leaving the rest of the infrastructure intact.

While Radiant Images handles the capture process with precision, they don’t create the final video. Instead, they partner with companies like Gracia, which specializes in 4DGS (4-Dimensional Gaussian Splats) volumetric videos. This collaboration brings together expertise and innovation to deliver high-quality results.

As for costs, it’s clear that Radiant Images is catering to professional studios rather than individual enthusiasts. While I didn’t receive a public figure on the price tag, it’s safe to say that this is an enterprise-level solution designed for those who demand exceptional quality.

The implications of Radiant Images’ portable system are far-reaching and exciting. With the ability to capture high-quality Gaussian Splat videos anywhere in the world, creators can now push the boundaries of mixed reality and volumetric content. This could mean more immersive experiences for fans, greater opportunities for influencers and musicians, and new avenues for storytelling and entertainment. As VR technology continues to evolve, Radiant Images is clearly at the forefront, making it easier than ever to bring people and places into our living rooms.
