Splatoon Raiders started off as a tower defense game

Get Ready for a Wild Ride with Splatoon Raiders’ Looter-Shooter Action!

In a bold departure from its tower defense roots, Nintendo’s latest Switch 2 exclusive, Splatoon Raiders, has evolved into a looter-shooter spin-off that’s sure to thrill fans of the competitive multiplayer series. According to an insider chat between director Yoshihiko Ito and producer Seita Inoue, the game’s initial prototype was surprisingly more like a base defense game than the action-packed experience we know and love today.

As the team behind Splatoon Raiders worked on updates for Splatoon 3, they began exploring the idea of creating a single-player experience that would leverage the gameplay of Salmon Run, the series’ signature PvE mode. However, early attempts at building gameplay around placing traps proved to be a non-starter, with Ito admitting, “The first thing we tried was building gameplay around placing traps… The idea was to place traps all over the place and fight alongside them.” But this concept didn’t quite feel like Splatoon enough for the developers.

“We think the intensity of the action is one of the game’s key strengths,” Ito emphasizes. “But when the core gameplay shifts to building a fortress and fighting off enemies, it becomes difficult to make the most of that strength.” This realization marked a turning point in the development process, prompting the team to shift away from the tower defense concept and focus on creating a more dynamic experience.

With this new direction, the team introduced gadgets – think power-ups, but with a twist. Players can now equip two gadgets at a time, switching between them rapidly to minimize downtime and take down hordes of Salmonids. Ito notes that “by rapidly swapping between a weapon and two gadgets, players can minimize downtime and efficiently take down a large number of Salmonids.” This innovative gameplay mechanic is sure to keep players engaged for hours on end.

Inoue compares the satisfaction of playing Salmon Run to being in the zone while playing sports or working on a busy job. “It’s that level of immersion,” he says, “that might be really satisfying in a video game too.” With Splatoon Raiders’ looter-shooter action, players will experience just that – an immersive and thrilling experience that’s all about rapid-fire gadget switching and high-stakes combat.

This bold new direction for the series is sure to excite fans of both Splatoon and looter-shooters alike. As we eagerly await the release of Splatoon Raiders on Switch 2, one thing is certain: this game promises to be an unforgettable ride that will push the boundaries of VR gaming even further.

The future of VR gaming just got a whole lot more exciting, as Nintendo continues to innovate and push the limits of what’s possible. With its innovative gameplay mechanics and thrilling looter-shooter action, Splatoon Raiders is set to become one of the most talked-about games of the year – and we can’t wait to dive in and experience it for ourselves!
