Sony’s Insomniac Games replied, “We don’t have plans”.
This response was on X, and the context of this question was an Insomniac blog post welcoming summer interns. UploadVR contacted Sony for confirmation that Insomniac was not working on a PlayStation VR2 title. We’ll update the article when we hear back. We have no plans to do this. Since its foundation in the late 1990s, Insomniac has primarily developed PlayStation games under contract with Sony. This includes the Spyro Resistance and Ratchet & Clank Series. Insomniac released a few PlayStation flatscreen games from 2016-2019, and also four PC VR games on contract for Facebook. These were, in order:
, a third-person gamepad-controlled gamepad adventure game based upon H.P. At the Mountains of Madness by Lovecraft. It was released very shortly after Rift and is regarded as one of the best launch-window games.
is a third-person gamepad controlled brawler in which your character can transform into an animal. It wasn’t as well received by the public as some of the other VR games from this studio. It is considered to be one the best VR titles of all-time. May 27, 2025
is a massive open-world shooter that supports two-player co-op. This is one of only a few AAA-quality VR games on PC. It launched six months following the release of
, along with Oculus Quest’s Oculus Link. Insomniac’s close relationship to Facebook,
- Edge of Nowhere, led to rumors of the company buying it. Insomniac was actually acquired by Sony,
- Feral Rites. Insomniac had four Rift-based games, and Sony owned the
- The Unspoken for the original PlayStation VR. Many VR professionals expected Sony to use this studio to create VR games for a PlayStation VR2 running on the PS5 (both were rumors back then). Many hoped that Insomniac would bring their Rift titles to PlayStation VR. However, it is likely that Facebook owns these IPs. Naturally, none of this has happened. Insomniac’s VR games are only available on Meta’s PC VR Store, and the studio doesn’t have any VR games on PlayStation. The studio, which was acquired by Disney, has instead continued to produce flatscreen Spider-Man games and Ratchet & Clank games. It is also currently working on a Wolverine flatscreen game.

Sony Acquires Insomniac Games
Insomniac Games — the developers behind Sony’s PS4 megahit Spider-Man — are going to become part of Sony Worldwide Studios. Sony’s acquisition of Insomniac turns the PS4 and PSVR maker into the owner of upcoming PC VR game Stormland and a host of other VR and AR projects. Big news:

Former head of PlayStation Studios Shuhei Yoshida is “sorry” for being wrong about PlayStation VR2, though described his work on the original as “the most fun I had”.
