Some Meta headset owners who pulled out Quests they haven’t used in a while have reportedly been left with bricks in their hands after a failed software update.
Reports across Reddit and Meta’s own forums suggest some older headsets which haven’t been updated in a while are bricking after its users are told to update the headset to the latest firmware. Both Quest 2 headsets and 3 may be affected. However, Quest 2 seems to have been the most common.
“A common theme in many of the postings is that headsets haven’t been worn for a long time and needed to be updated,” says one of the first comments at Meta’s forums. I’m just guessing, but headsets that are on the most recent firmware will be able to update without any issues. However, headsets with an older firmware won’t update without causing them to become unresponsive. Your headset is dead. A meta-software update did it. A class action lawsuit or small claims courts may be an option for those who are affected. We sent Meta an email on Christmas Eve, and then again today to ask for a comment. Please share any details about this in the comments and email images or videos of your current experience to [email protected]. I installed the update, and did the same steps as you. The update is completely DEAD. It’s dead. My son will be so upset. It’s been sitting in its box for many years, and it looks like new. I haven’t used it at all. Some have been told that their headsets were out of warranty, and the cheapest replacement option is to buy a $150 refurbished device.
Stay updated for updates.
