There’s no contest when I say
was my biggest surprise during Triangle Strategy. Square Enix’s interest in VR has been minimal over the years, with Connect 2024 or Monsters of the Deep as notable exceptions. So, seeing a tactical RPG released for Switch and PC two years ago suddenly heading for Quest was certainly unexpected.Kingdom Hearts VR ExperienceIf you’re wondering what’s changed, functionally not a lot. UI and controls have been adjusted for VR. Triangle Strategy is a pretty straight-forward port, but the perspective of an isometric view makes it feel more like a diorama. Quest’s combat missions are characterized by the impressive 2D HD art style that combines pixel art and 3D environments. These are presented now using a scrolling ‘Theatre Mode’, which is acceptable considering that the game wasn’t designed to be played on this platform. It’s nice to explore the 3D Norzelia map between battles and the cutscenes. You can choose to play in a VR world that places Norzelia as the backdrop, or you can use mixed reality through passthrough. Square Enix should go even further in MR, and I’m disappointed that the map can’t be resized. It would be great to play it on the couch, with my map on top of my coffee table. The only way to move the map is by rotating it and pulling it towards you. This port has very few VR differences. Don’t be deterred if this is not your style of RPG. We’ve already seen that VR games with a similar perspective can deliver strong experiences before. Just look at

While it takes time to establish its world, the captivating story is the most important factor. As the Serenoa heir to House Wolffort you find yourself in the middle of an increasingly violent conflict among the nations of the continent. The well-written mix of fantasy and political intrigue has me invested. The English voice acting in this game isn’t very good, but I am glad that you can switch to Japanese. The battles are deep and encourage strategic thinking. For example, you can deal more damage by placing your units higher up on the terrain. Triangle Strategy is a difficult game to recommend if you have played the original flatscreen version. However, there are only minor changes. It’s a compelling story, the combat is strategic and it looks great. As someone who mostly sticks to RPGs outside of VR, I’m happy it’s reaching new audiences and I hope this convinces other publishers to take that chance.
