Bonelab will add inside-out body tracking to Quest 3 and 3S

Brandon J Laatsch, of Stress Level Zero described inside-out tracking in

as the “most game-changing feature” of VR hardware in the past two years since the introduction of tracked controllers. Inside-out body track will be available in Patch 7 or Patch 8 in the year

. Patch 6 was released in August. This followed Patch 5 and described which introduced major Quest 3 upgrades and physics improvements. The release date for Patch 7 is not yet known.

IOBT, which tracks your chest and arms from the perspective of the VR headset, has been the biggest game changer in VR hardware since the tracked controllers were introduced in 2016. The feature is compatible with both the 3 and 3s on PC. It will be impossible to compete with those that have it. This feature eliminates issues that arise with the inverse kinematics estimated arms. These are frequently incorrect, and can feel uneasy because they are based on the position of the head and the hands. When developers integrate IOBT, you see your arms and torso in their actual positions – not an estimate.BonelabIOBT shipped in December. Almost a year after its release, it is still used only by a small number of apps. These include SwordsmanVR, Drunkn bar Fight, XRWorkout and FastHands. Bonelab, which focuses on physics-based, full body interaction with the virtual environment, could benefit from using IOBT. It’s not hard to see why Laatsch was so eager to introduce IOBT into Bonelab.
