Metro Awakening’s VR gameplay is atmospheric and immersive

You don’t need to look far for post-apocalyptic action in VR, but there’s something particularly exciting about a new Metro game. Awakening, written by Dmitry Glukhovsky the creator of Metro 2033, takes an interesting approach in delivering an origin tale set five years prior to Metro 2033. You play as Serdar, a doctor trying to survive within the Moscow Metro and protect his wife.

, I recently previewed the PSVR 2 version at release date confirmation for a 45-minute demo where I played three different areas stitched together out of sequence. The first mission is a good way to set the mood, introducing me to Serdar and the basics of the game. You must find a gas-mask before dying from radiation poisoning. Later, you are faced with the decision of whether to kill every enemy in your path or sneak by. I feel tense when sneaking around, and a mistimed move scuppered my initial plan to bypass these villains quietly.Gamescom 2024Where Metro Awakening particularly shines is in the third mission. Instead of using visual clues that break immersion, clever audio design signsposts the path forward without being too obvious. It’s a great approach that plays into VR’s immersive capabilities well and puts you directly inside this bleak world, which only heightens Metro’s intense atmosphere.

I’ve always appreciated how Metro delivers atmospheric tension through exploring depressing locations, even with the constraints of flatscreen platforms. Metro is not unique in its narrative, but it’s effective. There’s a fascinating world that remains after a nuclear war. Awakening is not a horror title, but it always leaves me feeling uneasy. From a distance, you can hear the footsteps of creatures. I am constantly on guard for any signs of danger. As the music increases, mutants emerge through holes in walls. I make sure my gun is ready. The spider jumped at my face like it was a hugger. I didn’t hesitate to fire. This is all enhanced by

Great Physicality. The manual reloading system and the satisfying gunplay were similar to

, which I had also seen at Gamescom. Inventory management is improved in Awakening. Grabbers can pick up different items by using a controller other than the one they are currently holding. The backpack is not a novel method for VR. However, it does maintain immersion while holstering several essential accessories. The electric generator can be used to power up the doors, which require manually turning a crank or attaching cables using motion controls. The generator also recharges the head torch, which is a vital tool for exploring these dark and eerie corridors. Your lighter will also help you to fight spider webs. As of right now, I have no real complaints. Vertigo is doing a great job with Metro Awakening, adapting the series to the VR format with a strong atmosphere and physicality. Everything feels right at home inside a headset.
