A 40-minute interactive documentary arrives on Quest headsets in September to explore ADHD as part of the impactful Playing With Reality collection.
Impulse: Playing With Reality follows 2021 release Goliath in the collection from studio Anagram exploring different perspectives. Goliath offered an “effective, innovative account of psychosis” when it was released, and directors Barry Gene Murphy and May Abdalla follow the effort with a new trailer premiere for Impulse in connection with it competing in 2024’s Venice Immersive.
Here’s the official director’s statement explaining the effort:
“Social media would have us believe that we are all on a path of self discovery. In the growing pile of shared information, there is a lot about ADHD. ADHD is celebrated by some, while others dismiss it as ‘lazy’ or ‘delinquent’. ADHD is likely to affect 1 out of 4 UK prisoners. A diagnosis can be a revelation that helps people overcome the barriers they have been facing. We gathered over 100 hours of interviews from people at the extreme end of spectrum, working with neuroscientists. In order to create a story that was rich and embodied, we looked for poetry connections. The adrenaline-driven gameplay appealed to the dopamine depleted brain. The mixed reality game challenges your relationship to the new and familiar. We hope that by gaining insight into the motivations behind these behaviors, we can better understand ADHD.
