Open Blocks is the open-source version of Google abandoned VR art tools. It follows Open Brush, which was developed by the Icosa Foundation. Google acquired Tilt Brush, a tool for 3D drawings. Blocks was launched as a VR 3D modeling platform. Tilt Brush’s creators, who viewed the decision as “
“, decided to open source the software. Blocks will be revived by the Icosa Foundation, more than six years since the project ceased. The Icosa Foundation is working on a new release that includes Quest Pico and Steam. Open Blocks’ original files can be found at
“We have been hard at work with Google AR & VR to get the codebase into a useable state in the past few weeks, and anyone should now able to run the Unity Project,” immortality explains. We’ll switch to the OpenXR Framework and new Unity input system, allowing us to target Open Blocks to a wider range of XR-enabled devices. We will then be aiming for a standalone XR version and bringing Open Blocks onto the Pico and Quest platforms. There will also be many opportunities to implement immersive XR functions such as MR Passthrough. Support for glTF importing and Icosa Gallery is also planned. This will replace Google’s now defunct 3D remixing platform Poly.
