Developed by Myron Games, best known for its VR sandbox god simulator,

, Underworld Overseer shares some similarities but mixes in tactical combat. Playing the powerful god-like Overseer, this villain protagonist adventure tasks you with managing an underground lair and its various minions, protecting your base from invaders across an 18-level campaign.Deisimhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16fO15Q4r6k

Following a short demo at GDC 2024, I recently went hands-on with a preview build on Quest 3. Underworld Overseer has a simple control system that makes it easy to get started. The Touch Controller grip button is used to change position and the left and right sticks are used for movement and camera snapping. I've played three levels that took me about 20 minutes to complete. Although I didn't feel rushed at all, you don't have a lot of time. You can choose the next action by pressing a button on the pop-up, which is perfect for the motion controls. It also reduces the potential for monotony in management. Some blocks even contain gold that you can keep in treasure rooms. You don't need to hollow out everything, though hidden treasure rooms were a pleasant surprise while expanding my lair.

Once an area was excavated, I began building ‘Work Rooms’ and selecting the tiles you’d like to fill creates them instantly. You can summon Imps at any time, but it costs mana. Building libraries and training areas summons Cultists, which are magical Cultists, and Warriors who focus on melee combat. It’s a good strategy, as attackers can take many different forms. The Work Rooms can be complemented with ‘Utility rooms’, which require less space and are more functional. Set up of farms will ensure that your minions are not hungry, and the rest rooms allow them to sleep. Your army’s performance in guarding your hideout can be affected if it is not properly cared for. As time passes, more tools become available to help you stop the waves of enemies. Alarm traps warn you of approaching enemies, and spike traps are fun to use for nearby intruders. It was also easy to manage units. I was able to use a banner or a minion to move across the map.

Thankfully, you’re also not completely reliant on your minions. Myron confirmed that you can also use magic attacks such as Chain Lightning, Fireball or Raise Skeleton, though I was only able to unlock one in my playthrough. The mana for each of these attacks regenerates slowly, which means you cannot spam them. However, I did find Fireballs very effective when needed. Even when moving up close, the cel-shaded graphics look fantastic on Quest 3. What I’ve seen so far looks very promising, and I’ll be keeping an eye out for the full release.

Underworld Overseer currently targets a Q4 2024 release window on the Meta Quest platform and
